God’s Word is filled with stories of His people giving extravagantly for the causes of God. Whether it was the Israelites being told to stop giving for the construction of the tabernacle because they had brought more than enough (Ex 36), Joseph blessing his brothers with wealth as a sign of his abundant forgiveness (Gen 45), Zacchaeus paying back all those whom he had formerly defrauded (Luke 19), or the the church meeting the needs of all (Acts 2), the legacy of God’s people is one of generosity.
This all flows from our identity as Christians. We recognize that we had nothing to offer God, but in His grace He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Eph 1:3). All that we have is a gift from God. Therefore, having received infinite kindness from our God, we want to imitate Him and be a hospitable and generous people. We know that God who was rich became poor for our sakes, that we might be rich in Him (2 Cor 8:9).
Out of joy, we therefore give back a portion of what God has given to us so that more might come to know the gospel of Jesus Christ and the generosity of our God. The Bible encourages cheerful, regular giving as an act of worship and a means for meeting the needs of God’s people (2 Cor 9). We encourage you to develop a regular habit of giving an offering to God’s church.
